The CFX™ Micro Hip System has been developed to provide Total Hip replacement (THR) as the primary recommendation for very small dog breeds (and adult cats). The THR veterinary orthopedic surgeon will now have an additional surgical option other than femoral head osteotomy for very small breeds. SYSTEM
The implant system consists of two femoral stems (sizes #2 and #3), two femoral heads (8mm +0 and 8mm +2) and three acetabular cups (12mm 14mm, and 16mm). All components are interchangeable. The femoral stems and acetabular cups are similar to the current CFX™ System designs. All components are manufactured from the same materials used for the current CFX™ System.Acetate and digital x-ray tempates are available for size selection from film radiographs. A specifically designed set of instruments are available for implantation of the Micro Hip implants. Acetabular and femoral reamers are used to prepare the implant beds. Trial implants confirm adequate bed preparation and implant selection. Alignment guides, inserters, impactors and tissue guards have applications similar to those used on larger dogs. SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
The surgical technique is basically the same as for larger dogs receiving a cemented THR, except the patient is smaller. The approach, exposure and retraction are consistent with the current THR technique except smaller instruments are used. The femoral medullary canal is opened with a hand awl, either before or after the femoral head is removed. Small drills, a tapered reamer and a small file are used to prepare the femoral cavity. A power reamer and spherical reamers are used to prepare the acetabular bed. Trials are used to confirm size and implant positioning for the stem and cup. Once the beds are prepared, the components are cemented into place with PMMA. A trial reduction using the trial femoral heads confirms implant positioning and joint tension. Closure is performed in a routine manner. The CFX™ Micro Hip System was developed in conjunction with William D. Liska, DVM, DACVS from Gulf Coast Veterinary Surgery, Houston, Texas.
