(Boonton, NJ) March 7. 2008—A new canine elbow replacement system shows promise of wide acceptance by veterinary surgeons,  by combining ease of implantation with minimal trauma to the patient. 

BioMedtrix, a leader in the design and manufacture of veterinary orthopedic implants, has teamed up with Idaho veterinary surgeon Randy Acker and produced a new total arthroplasty of the elbow or
TATE™ system. 

Specifically, the new system is a minimally invasive resurfacing arthroplasty with milling based on the axis of the center of rotation.

The goal in designing the TATE system, according to Acker, was to produce “an elbow replacement system that would be accepted and used by surgeons…” For vets, the complexity of the surgery is comparable to  that of a hip replacement operation. “[W}e felt that surgical ease, low morbidity, and a low complication rate were essential.” Acker said initially the surgery required three hours, but with continued trials, he now completes it in two.

The patient’s comfort was also foremost in the design. “Throughout the process of development we chose to minimize trauma to the patient and keep working parts to a minimum."

And the original patient is what drove the development of a new elbow system. Acker’s yellow Labrador retriever, Tate, developed severe elbow dysplasia, and while Acker tried the common treatments of “injections, arthroscopic surgery, acupuncture, and pain meds,” the outcome wasn’t successful. The TATE system was the eventual result.

Biomedical engineer Greg Van Der Meulen aided in moving Acker’s initial idea on to mechanical development. Then came sawbones and cadavers and now, 10 years later, the new elbow system is in clinical trials and proving itself exceptional for surgeons and canines alike.
